Lester L. Kinnison, age 93 of Lincoln, NE (formerly Nebr. City) passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at The Monarch in Lincoln, NE.  Les and Janis moved to Lincoln in February of 2013. 

 Les was born on February 11, 1924 in Nebraska City, NE; the son of Charles and Milda (Eaton) Kinnison.  He attended school in Nebraska City and graduated from Nebraska City High School with the class of 1942.  Les then entered the United States Army in 1943 and proudly served his country during WWII.  He served overseas in the Philippines and received the Bronze Star Medal and Combat Infantry Badge as well as various other citations.  He was honorably discharged in 1946. 

 After returning from service, Lester was united in marriage to Janis Louise Heng on June 18, 1947 at St. Joseph Catholic Church,  Paul, NE.  He furthered his education at Peru State College for three years and then worked as a Deputy for the Otoe County Sheriff Office for four years.  After his time as a Deputy he was the Otoe County Clerk for six years and then he became a Rural Mail Carrier, a job he held for 25 years before retiring in March of 1985. 

Lester was very involved in the Nebraska City community.  He was a Life Member of the American Legion Post No. 8 for which he served as Past Commander.  He also served as a member of the American Legion Guard for over 60 years.  He was a Life Member of VFW Post #2634 and Past Commander, the Knights of Columbus, the Nebraska City Eagles and the Disabled American Veterans.  He also belonged to the United Commercial Travelers since 1950 for which he served as the Secretary and Treasurer for the Nebraska City Council #569, Past Grand Secretary for a three year term and Past Supreme Secretary for a six years term.  Other memberships include Voiture 1015, 40 & 8 ( Past Chef de Gare), Bagman of Bagdad of Nebraska and Iowa, and St. Mary’s Church. 

Lester remained very active after his retirement.  Les served as Finance Commissioner for Nebr. City from 1986 to 1990.  He enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels and attending his grandkids’ sports and school functions.  He was an avid reader and a football fan but his greatest love was his family.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 70 years, Janis Kinnison of Lincoln, NE; children:  Patrice Hahn and husband Michael of Lincoln, NE; Michael Kinnison and wife Lea of Lincoln, NE and Craig Kinnison and wife Jennifer of Waterloo, NE; 9 grandchildren:  Sarah McMillan and husband Scott, Adam Hahn and friend Joe Hergert, Meagan Hubenka and husband Nathan, Ryan Kinnison, Tonya Thober and husband Jon, Kaelin Clark and husband Bryan, Kelsey Kinnison, Clara Kinnison and Chloe Kinnison; great-grandchildren:  Arianna Hahn, Liam McMillan, Nikolai, Corbin and Marcella Hubenka, Emma, Jackson, Ava and Cohen Thober, Cooper,  Mckinley and Cael Clark; three sisters-in-law:  Sharon Heng of Lincoln, NE; Lois Kreifels of Nebr. City, NE and Mary Farley of Syracuse, NE; brother-in-law Bob Heng and wife Bonnie of Lincoln, NE; other family and friends. 

Lester was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Raymond, four sisters:  Hazel Kopf, Eva Lahman, Neva Kneale and Esther Kinnison in infancy (his twin sister) as well as other extended family members. 

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 27, 2017 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nebraska City with Fr. Michael McCabe officiating.  Burial will follow the services at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Nebraska City with Military Honors conducted by the Nebraska National Guard Funeral Honors Detail and the Talmage American Legion Post. 

The family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sunday followed by a rosary/prayer services at 6:00 p.m. - all at Gude Mortuary. 

Memorials may be given to family choice for future designation.
