VOICE OF DEMOCRACY

January 30, 2010

The Department of Nebraska Veterans of Foreign Wars welcomed ten district winners to the Voice of Democracy 2009-2010 Mid Winter Banquet in Grand Island Nebraska. The contestants each entered  with a  local post, producing an audio essay using the "Does America Still Have Heroes?" theme. After winning at their respective districts they arrived at Grand Island. State Chairman Billy Smith and Auxiliary State Chairman Carol Thompson recognized each student as a winner and as a future leader of our country. Chairman Smith then announced the winners starting with 10th place winner through the 1st place winner. All the contestants were encouraged to take the message of the Voice of Democracy to their schools and to encourage other students to participate in the contest.


FIRST PLACE WINNER

Jackie M Lemmer, our first place winner, is from Atkinson Nebraska, where she attends Chambers Public School. Jackie's parents are Mike and Kathy Lemmer.

O'Neill VFW Post and Aux 926 and District 11 sponsored Jackie. In addition to the Post and District prizes Jackie receives the VFW Post 2704 first place award of $2,000.00.

Jackie will be going to Washington D.C., all expenses paid, on March 6, 2010 and returning
March10, 2010. In D.C. she will meet up with the winners from all the other States and
tour many of the sites.

On June 17-20, 2010 Jackie will be going to the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge
Voice of Democracy/American Leaders Youth Summit. This trip is again all expenses paid. Congratulations Jackie.

SECOND PLACE WINNER

Dalsey K Lambley from Gordon NE was
our
second place state winner. Dalsey was
sponsored
 by VFW Post and Aux 5639,
Hay Springs and District 1. Dalsey attends 
Gordon/Rushville High School and her
parents are Jim and Deneen Lambley. 
In addition to the Post and District prizes
 Dalsey received the Humana Insurance 
award of $1,000.00.

THIRD PLACE WINNER

Our third place winner was Jennifer K Laflan,
sponsored by VFW Post and Aux 1151
Creighton NE and District 3. Jennifer attends
 Creighton Community High School and her
parents are Douglas and Cathy Laflan.
In addition to Post and District prizes, 
Jennifer  received the VFW Post and
Auxiliary 1504 award of $500.00.
