1st Place –    Alexis Canen is the winner of the $5,000 North End Post 144, Paul A. Spera Past Commander-in-Chief Award for writing the First Place winning essay in the organization’s National Patriot’s Pen Competition.  Alexis is an 8th grade student.  Alexis was sponsored by VFW Post 1125 and Ladies Auxiliary in Glendive, Montana. (First place winner will receive her award during the Parade of Winners in Washington, D.C. on March 3, 2014)

2nd Place – Noelle Nakaoka, a 6th grade student, sponsored by VFW Post 2875 in Ewa Beach, Hawaii, will receive the $4,000 VFW Award. 3rd Place – Olivia Leising, a 7th grade student, sponsored by VFW Post 9357, Cambridge, Nebraska, will receive the $3,500 VFW Award. 4th Place –  Hanna Terhaar, an 8th grade student, sponsored by VFW Post 8255 and Ladies Auxiliary, Middleburg, Florida will receive the $2,750 Alaine Ralphs Benson Memorial Scholarship Award. (Glass Etched Plaque and Wood Plaque for sponsoring Post will be sent to Department Headquarters for presentation during Department Convention or other appropriate event.)

5th Place –  Katherine Stacey, an 8th grade student, sponsored by VFW Post 5297, Cathlamet, Washington will receive the $2,500 Rehoboth Beach Post 7447 and Auxiliary (Dept. of Delaware) Award. (Glass Etched Plaque and Wood Plaque for sponsoring Post will be sent to Department Headquarters for presentation during Department Convention or other appropriate event. 

6th Place – Morgan Reeder, a 7th grade student, sponsored by VFW Post 1695 and Ladies Auxiliary, Perry, Utah will receive the $2,000 Clyde A. Lewis Dept. of New York and Ladies Auxiliary Award. 7th Place –   Jordan Johnson, an 8th grade student, sponsored by VFW Post 9365 and Ladies Auxiliary, Wasilla, Alaska will receive the $1,750 Dept. of New Hampshire George J. Maxfield Post 1772 and Ladies Auxiliary John A. Knapper Memorial Award. 8th Place –   Cheyanna Slack, a 7th grade student, sponsored by VFW Post 5850, Eufaula, Alabama will receive the $1,500 John F. Gwizdak Award. 9th Place – Andrew Thompson, an 8th grade student, sponsored by VFW Post  9249 and Ladies Auxiliary, Grand Island, New York will receive the $1,500 VFW Award. 10th Place – Joseph Galasso, an 8th grade student, sponsored by VFW Post 10188, Tucson, Arizona will receive the $1,250 VFW Award. 11th Place – Nikole Rivers, an 8th grade student, sponsored by VFW Post 10980 and Ladies Auxiliary, Eutawville, South Carolina will receive the $1,250 Grace Minnix Memorial Award.

12th Place    Natalie Hasbrooke, an 8th grade student, sponsored by VFW Post 688 and Ladies Auxiliary, Boerne, Texas will receive the $1,000 Golden Valley VFW Post 7051 (Golden Valley, Minnesota) Award.

13th Place    Remy Butts, an 8th grade student, sponsored by VFW Post 7819, Crewe, Virginia will receive the $1,000 VFW Award.  

14th Place    Victoria Gilles, an 8th grade student, sponsored by VFW Post 2695, Shelbyville, Indiana will receive the $750 Department of Georgia and its Ladies Auxiliary Award.

15th Place    Hannah Duffy, an 8th grade student, sponsored by VFW Post 5117 and Ladies Auxiliary, Carthage, Illinois will receive the $750 VFW Department of  Washington and Ladies Auxiliary Eric G. Sandstrom Memorial Patriot’s Pen Award.

16th Place    Sydnee Soderborg, an 8th grade student, sponsored by VFW Post 8660, Dayton, Nevada will receive the $500 John V. Daniel’s Jr. Post 2813 and Auxiliary (Dept. of New York) Award.

21st Place    Kendall Barrett, a 6th grade student, sponsored by VFW Post 3679 and Ladies Auxiliary, Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia will receive the $500 Warren A. Tressler Memorial Award (Dept. of Minnesota).

27th Place    Alexandra Gonzalez, a 7th grade student sponsored by VFW Post  9892, FPO,  AP (Department of Pacific Areas) will receive the $500 Department of Ohio Award. 

28th Place    Ivy Scuville, an 8th grade student sponsored by VFW Post 3554, Ellenboro, West Virginia will receive the $500 Department of South Dakota VFW and Ladies Auxiliary Award.

29th Place    Adam Wood, a 6th grade student sponsored by VFW Post 3182 and Ladies Auxiliary, North Bend, Oregon will receive the $500 Dept. of Idaho and its Ladies Auxiliary Award.

30th Place    Cheyenne Wilfert, an 8th grade student sponsored by VFW Post 2284 and Ladies Auxiliary, Edwardsburg, Michigan will receive the $500 Glenn D. Raney Memorial Award (LA.) 

31st Place    Olivia Merritt, an 8th grade student sponsored by VFW Post 7920 and Ladies Auxiliary, Osage, Iowa will receive the $500 Mary Margaret Romano Memorial Award (Dept. of CT.)

32nd Place   Sarah Hardy, an 8th grade student sponsored by VFW Post 4302, Yazoo City, Mississippi will receive the $500 VFW Southern Conference Award.

33rd Place   Cassandra Zaino, an 8th grade student sponsored by VFW Post 10722 and Ladies Auxiliary, Pelham, New Hampshire will receive the $500 Edward S. Banas, Sr. Award.

34th Place    Enrique de la Rosa, a 6th grade student sponsored by VFW Post 6471 and Ladies Auxiliary, Manchester, Vermont will receive the $500 Deering Memorial Post 6859, Portland Maine Scholarship Award.

35th Place    Jacob Grueninger, an 8th grade student sponsored by VFW Post 10080, Pylesville, Maryland will receive the $500 Department of Tennessee John Furgess Award.

36th Place    Anna Polk, an 8th grade student sponsored by VFW Post 1736 and Ladies Auxiliary, Pineville, Louisiana will receive the $500 Department of Missouri VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary Award.

37th Place    Heidi Pickering, a 7th grade student sponsored by VFW Post 4726, Brandon, South Dakota will receive the $500 James R. and Pat Mueller Award. 

38th Place    William Shedden, a 6th grade student sponsored by VFW Post 9342, Ansbach, Germany (Department of Europe) will receive the $500 Robin V. Fell Memorial Award.

39th Place    Sebastian Trujillo, an 8th grade student sponsored by VFW Post 3822, Panama, Republica De Panama will receive the $500 Deering Memorial Post 6859, Ladies Auxiliary Portland Maine Award. 

40th Place    Maura Skelley, an 8th grade student sponsored by VFW Post 3, Altoona, Pennsylvania will receive the $500 Department of South Carolina and Ladies Auxiliary Award. 

41st Place    Kenton Bogan, a 6th grade student sponsored by VFW Post 3961, Julesburg, Colorado will receive the $500 Sanford-Springvale Memorial VFW Post 9935 Award.

42nd Place   Cali Houston, an 8th grade student sponsored by VFW Post 1991, Jonesboro, Arkansas will receive the $500 Department of California Award.

43rd Place   Jessalyn Lierenz, an 8th grade student sponsored by VFW Post 3792 and Ladies Auxiliary, Middletown, Delaware will receive the $500 Department of Arkansas, “Dewayne Fletcher Memorial” Award.

44th Place    Christopher Briones, a 6th grade student sponsored by VFW Post 7564 and Ladies Auxiliary, West Fargo, North Dakota will receive the $500 Frederick H. Smalley Department of New Mexico Patriot’s Pen Scholarship.

45th Place    William Monast, a 7th grade student sponsored by VFW 916, Wakefield, Rhode Island will receive the $500 VFW Department of Pacific Areas Award.

46th Place    Grace Bane, an 8th grade student sponsored by VFW Post 4884 and Ladies Auxiliary, Spiro, Oklahoma will receive the $500 VFW Department of  New Jersey Award.

In this, the nineteenth year of the program, there were fifty-four finalists, one from 52 participating Departments, and one each from two of the VFW Departments overseas (Europe  and Pacific Areas.)

All participants will later receive a citation signed by the Commander-in-Chief and Ladies Auxiliary President for participating.

  3. Hi, I was wondering if you don’t mind me asking, did the winner receive $5,000 scholarship money or $5,000 in cash to use however they’d like? Also, if my school submitted the essays, how can I find out if I won post level? Thank you.

  5. Hi. I was also wondering when are they announcing Nebraska state winners. I won the local in Albion, Nebraska and was wondering who won because the sponsor for our post told me that there was a delay in judging. So when and where can we find the results?

  6. Hi, Im a student and i entered in the 2013/2014 Patriots Pen essay contest. 3 people at my school have won the local prize, have you announced the national, or any of the other winners. If not, when are you going to announce it?
